Reported speech 2: Say vs Tell

Reporting verbs say and tell: Say y tell son verbos similares que producen mucha confusión.  1. Cuando utilizamos  "tell"   tenemos que añadir el objeto directo (me, you, us), le decimos a alguien algo. Por ejemplo: John  told  me  (that) he was going to be late. ==>" You tell somebody something" 2.  "Say" se utiliza para decirle algo a alguien. Es muy utilizado en direct speech acompañado del "to" . Por ejemplo: Ann said goodbye   to   me and left.==>"You say something to somebody" También se utiliza con el reported speech sin el "to", por ejemplo:  John  said  (that) he would be late. ==>"You say Something" Activity 2: Say vs Tell Say vs Tell activity

Reported speech 1(He said that...)

Direct speech and Reported speech Imagina que a tu amigo David se encuentra enfermo y se lo quieres decir a alguien. Esto lo podemos hacer de dos formas: 1. Direct speech: Repetir las palabras de David: David said " I am feeling ill." 2. Reported speech:  David said that he was feeling ill. También, se puede decir: David said he was feeling ill (se suprime el that ). Si observas los ejemplos anteriores, se ha pasado de presente a pasado: el  am  ha pasado a  was . El pronombre también cambia de " I "   a " he ". Aquí tienes otros ejemplos: Si en el Direct speech aparece el verbo en past simple o present perfect, se pasará a past perfect cuando se transforme a reported speech. Por ejemplo: Susan said "I went to the doctor, so I didn't go to work." Susan said (that) she had gone to the doctor, so she hadn't gone to work. Susan said "I  have gone  to the doctor, so I  haven't gone  to work.

Story Maker and retelling.

Students will make their own story using the Story Maker application from the British Council’s website. They can make three types of stories: a fairy story, a horror story, or a science fiction story. O nce they have created the story they will work in groups of three, they will exchange the stories and read them individually. Retelling is a methodology used to assess how well a student has comprehended a story.
